Quick Overview

Webbing Solution is a clear liquid added to gel coat to obtain spatter or cobweb effects. It is mixed with a gel coat of one color, and sprayed onto a contrasting colored surface. Decorative effects produced by the webbing mixture will vary, and relate directly to techniques or gun adjustments. A fine hairline spider web pattern results from plenty of air and scanty material flow. Coarse and splotchy patterns are created by fuller material flow and decreased air volume. Experimentation will help determine the desired effect.

Webbing solution is an additive to gel coat paint that is used to create a surface with a spider web or spattered effect to it. The effect is dependent upon the air pressure of the spray gun that you use to apply it---setting the spray gun to 10 to 15 psi creates a spider web effect, air pressure between 5 and 10 psi results in a spattered effect. The gel coat and webbing solution is mixed the same; experiment to find the result you want. For best results, follow the instructions specific to the manufacturer of the gel coat and webbing solution.

Things You'll Need

  • Gel coat
  • Webbing solution
  • Spray gun
  • Large bucket
  • Stirring stick

Determine the total amount of Gelcoat you will need. Expect to gelcoat 70 to 100 square feet per gallon of solution.

Divide the total amount of paint you will need by 3. This is the amount of webbing solution you will need. Multiply this number by 2 to determine the amount of gel coat to use.

Mix the 2 parts gel coat to 1 part webbing solution in a large bucket, using the stirring stick to distribute.

Fill a spray gun with the mixture and apply to the surface, refilling the spray gun as necessary.
